Macadamia nuts are actually the tree’s seeds, and with the right care, you can plant them at home and grow your own beautiful macadamia tree. These fresh, in-shell nuts are perfect for gardeners, hobby growers, and families who want a fun, long-term project. Macadamias are slow growers, but the process is rewarding and exciting to watch. 🍃✨

Growing macadamias from seed 🌱

  1. Use fresh nuts in their shells. Shelled kernels will not sprout. Choose the freshest, recently harvested nuts for the best chance of success.

  2. Soak the nuts overnight in warm water to wake them up and signal it’s time to grow. 💧

  3. Prepare a small pot, about the size of a 1-litre container, and fill it with good-quality, free-draining potting mix. No fertiliser is needed at this stage.

  4. Plant each nut about 1 cm below the soil surface. Find the tiny white dot on the shell, called the micropyle. This is where the sprout will emerge. Place it facing sideways for best results. 🌰➡️🌱

  5. Place the pot in a warm, sunny place. Keep the soil moist but never soggy. A quick finger check helps: if soil sticks heavily to your finger, it’s too wet.

  6. Be patient. Macadamias are slow to sprout and may take several months. Once the sapling has a few sets of leaves and roots filling the pot, move it to a bigger container or into the garden.

  7. Choose a sunny, well-draining spot outdoors. Dig a hole slightly deeper than the pot and gently settle the young plant in, keeping all soil around the roots. Water well and continue watering generously every other day for the next two weeks. 🌞💦

  8. Ongoing care: Macadamias are hardy Australian natives and need little maintenance once established. Water only in hot, dry weather, feed with native-friendly fertiliser in Autumn and Spring, and keep the base mulched.

  9. Protect from frost. If frost is expected, wrap the trunk to prevent damage. Leaves may recover, but trunk damage can be fatal. ❄️

  10. Expect nuts in a few years. Your tree will support birds and insects along the way, and with time, you’ll enjoy your own home-grown macadamias. 🐝🌳🥥
